Procedure for requesting items from branch libraries or other SA libraries via SACat (Sabinet)
1. To be able to request items online from other SA libraries, you need to be registered as an Interlending user. Once registered, you can proceed. Click here to register online.  
2. Important: Please check the following for availability before you proceed with your request:

3. Click on Sabinet Online or go to www.library.up.ac.za  >>  My Library Space  >>  Interlending: Requests.  
4. Type your surname and student/personnel no. if requested to do so (not applicable inside UP libraries).  
5. Click on the drop down menu at Select a Database to Search.  
6. Choose SACat (Do not request from any other database).  
7. Search for: ( Type in author, title or keywords for books and journal title for articles ). Select appropriate search indicator in the drop down menu.  
8. Decide which item you want to request, and click on the blue text (not on the small box to the left).  
9. Scroll down to the bottom of the record to check for availability. Do not request a document that is available in our own library collection unless you add an explanatory note in the PATRON NOTE field at the bottom of the request form. Where there is more than one applicable record, select the one with the most library holdings.  
10. Click on to transfer the selected record to the interlending request form.  
11. Type in your own Interlending UserID and Password (available from Interlending Staff), eg:
User ID 2840-9999999 (your UP staff/student number: 7 or 8 digits)
Password 2840+9999
(4 digits as allocated by Sabinet, also available from your Interlending Specialist)
 
12. Scroll down to Requesting Information.  
13. Complete need by date (yyyymmdd) : 1 month from date requested please. The requested period is to ensure your request stays active.  
14. If an article is requested, change the following:
ILL Service Type from LOAN to COPY-NON-RETURNABLE
Item Type from MONOGRAPH to SERIAL
 
15. Bibliographic information: Complete author, title, date, vol, no, pages, etc. of the article.  
16. Use the PATRON NOTE to communicate with Interlending staff, eg a book is on loan, request is urgent, etc.  
17. Submit request. Make sure you have a Request ID after submitting. If not, use windows back option and resubmit.  
18. Click on Return.  
19. Exit and Logoff. This is important to avoid other users placing requests on your profile.
 
 
 
Requesting items from the Natural and Agricultural Collection journals prior to 1990 and older housed at the Groenkloof Education Library
It is recommended that you register as an Interlending user and request the required items via the Sabinet Request System.
 
Use the e-mail online request form only if you have an email program (Outlook, Pegasus, Communicator etc.) installed on your PC.
 
You are welcome to visit the Groenkloof Education Library to copy articles from the collection. Kindly note that you will have to add money at the Groenkloof Library Minolta desk on your UP student or staff card. Photocopy credits used at the Main Campus do not apply on the Groenkloof Campus.
