11 2010, Soccer World Cup Kick-off |
The build-up to the
official kick-off of the Fifa World Cup on June 11
2010 was unprecedented in South Africa. The
outpouring of support for Bafana Bafana and the
pride at being a World Cup host country has resulted
in never-seen-before levels of nation building and
patriotism.
The UP Library Services
joined in this campaign to celebrate and showcase
this milestone event. We kicked off our campaign
with our own branded shirts which were designed,
printed and distributed in April 2010. Football
Friday was observed and colleagues came to work
decked out in their football gear. It was a pleasure
to see the enthusiasm and camaraderie that prevailed
in being a part of this national campaign.
|
The Education Library on
the Groenkloof campus participated in the "Proudly
Groenkloof Day" on April 20 2010. This
programme served to create awareness of the
forthcoming World Cup. Supersport and Fifa
representatives addressed the attendees. A display
was also mounted and the Education Library was also
decked out in soccer memorabilia. |
 |
The Merensky Library was
decorated from the first week of May with soccer
paraphernalia that included soccer balls, copies of
official Fifa banners, flags and other banners. The
various Faculty Libraries mounted exhibitions on
the impact of this world event on South African
socio-economics. This included tourism, job
creation, architecture and engineering. It
felt wonderful walking into the Merensky Library and
being confronted with these displays. The plasma
screens added to the effect by screening
presentations on the stadiums, fixtures and general
World Cup information.
 |
The Digitisation
Unit kicked off the party spirit with their
Football Friday party on 04 June 2010. The Unit
was transformed with all sorts of football
memorabilia and posters. Janine Loubser' poster
which won 3rd place in the Goethe Institut's
continent wide "Libraries with a Kick"
competition was on display. Face painting,
bright costumes and colourful displays and
posters all contributed to an amazing buzz and
vibe. What a ball was held by all! |
 |
The staff room at the
Merensky Library was transformed into a soccer fan
zone on June 11 2010. Staff were invited to come in
their best fan gear and participate in the
competition for the best dressed fan, vuvuzela
blower and diski dancer. Burgers, chips and
cold-drinks were on the menu. Winners of the
competitions were Rolf Tonsing (best dressed fan),
Josiah Lebelo (best vuvuzela blower) and David
Mahlangu (best diski dancer).
We were also very
fortunate to have acquired our Dstv connection in
time for this party which added to the buzz during
the month long soccer-fest. Staff were able to watch
match replays and the games scheduled at 1330.
The 2010 Soccer World
Cup will be an indelible memory for South Africa,
and so too will the UP LS efforts to celebrate this
milestone be remembered for a very long time.

The
Open Scholarship Office scores for UP! |
|
The Department of Research Support plays an integral
role in the practical implementation of the University’s
research agenda and is
responsible for the management and population of the database
of research information at the University of Pretoria –
also referred to as the RIS (Research Information
System) database.
The
Open Scholarship Office on the other hand manages the
Open Access mandate which entails the archiving of
faculties’ research article outputs in the repository
UPSpace. The Open
Scholarship Office has been cooperating closely with the
Department of Research and Innovation since 2007. By
setting up Alerts and registering to the variety of
databases that the Department of Library Services
subscribe to, the Open Scholarship Office is alerted on
a weekly basis of each and every new research output
authored by University of Pretoria authors. This
information is captured meticulously and is used as a
basis for the submissions in the departmental research
article collections and
then
mapped to the openUP collection which currently holds a
total of 4336 articles. The
Open Scholarship
submitters are
Annah Molefe and Mark Ingram and the following
information specialists representing their faculties:
Hendriëtte Jansen van Vuuren (Economic
& Management Sciences), Clarisse Venter
(Education), Cathy Nkabinde (Natural and Agricultural
Sciences), Maureen Brassel and her team from the Health
faculty, Bozenna van Dijk, Lisa-Marie Swanepoel
(Humanities), Hendrik Breytenbach (Theology), Antoinette
Lourens and Susan Marsh (Veterinary Science).
In the past the Open Scholarship Office and the
Department of Research and Innovation mutually exchanged
research article outputs once a year and assisted each
other in finalizing the annual research report. All the
UPSpace submitted articles are then linked to the
electronic version of the annual research report
http://web.up.ac.za/research/2008/ An added
advantage of this collaboration is the articles that are
discovered each year. In 2007 the Open Scholarship
Office traced 13.83 units and in 2008 44.25 units (or 73
articles). This year the total has increased to 73.79
units or 143 articles. Each unit equals R120 000 for the
University of Pretoria!
The latest staggering number of finds emphasized the
importance of closer collaboration and the Open
Scholarship Office was approached by Dr Patricia Smit
and her team of RIS workers to establish a new working
relationship. One of the important decisions was the
need for data exchange on a more regular basis. Although
it is the responsibility of each department’s data
capturer to report the annual research article outputs,
UPSpace can now be utilized as a tool to verify outputs.
The RIS guidelines for Heads of department and
Researchers were also rewritten to include the Open
Access mandate.
The Department of Research and Innovation has invited
Elsabé Olivier as a member of their team to visit each
faculty’s Head of Research Committee posing a united
front as both departments have the same goals in
enhancing UP research output and increasing the
visibility of research at UP. During these meetings the
Open Access mandate is presented to each faculty,
showing the supportive role that the Open Scholarship
Office can play in the research reporting process for
each department.
This is what Department of Research and Innovation has
to say about the new collaboration and the latest Open
Scholarship finds:
“The collaboration between DRIS and the Library is an
extremely valuable source of recording all UP’s research
outputs in journal articles. The audited total units
were 1118.29 which shows the importance of this
collaboration. We have decided to change the way in
which we work together this year and are convinced that
this method will improve the collection of data. Our
first meeting was this morning and on reflection I think
Elsabé’s
inclusion already made a difference.” Dr Patricia
Smit,
Head: Research Support.
“Dear Elsabe and the Library team, You have been simply
excellent. Thank you so very much.” Dhesigen P
Naidoo,
Director: Research and Innovation Support.
Thank you Open Scholarship Team and all the eager and
enthusiastic information specialists who assist with the
annual submissions! The 2009 finds prove that our
efforts pay off. Keep up the good work!

The Digitisation Office had a very exciting July |
|
The Digitisation Office had
a very exciting July. First we decided to "vang gees"
with out Soccer Buzz and I want to thank each and
everyone who took the time off to visit our day of fun,
and a special BIG thank you to my team who did the
decorations, who so willingly painted faces, handed out
plates with something to eat, and just enjoy what they
were doing. Thank you Robert, for granting us
permission to just have our way with own "jollie
patrollie".
The "wall of fame" is still
wide open and you are welcome to write something on the
wall about how you felt about the FIFA World Cup, the
players and the countries that should be in but is out
and those that were suppose to go home early and that
entertain us to almost the end. Sorry Elliot, Brazil
did not make it – but I told you so!
Elliot has been lucky to
receive the price for the best dressed man during the
"Gees Vang" on Friday the 11 of June, and again I want
to thank him for being such a sport and let us decorated
him with whatever we could find in the office.
A promise we make is a
promise we keep and "the wall" will be painted by us
(another team building effort) during the second half of
August. We will first take photos of all the remarks
written on the wall to remind us of a very enjoyable
time.

Rectors' visit
We were very privileged to
receive Prof de la Rey during her visit to the library.
She visited the Digitisation Office and although we
hardly had time to show her the complete processes of
our work, she made a remark about the importance of
e-learning and that digitisation does play a huge role
towards making material available in the e-environment
for research.
It was an honour to have her
in our very soccer decorated office, and to have the
opportunity to personally say thank you to the UP-Exco
who helped us to establish the office.
SABINET's African Journal
Project
The Digitisation office is
currently working on a collaboration project with
SABINET-Gateway to digitise all the Geology Journals
from the first one ever published up to date. We have a
strict time line for the project and are working hard to
deliver the content in time. SABINET-Gateway payed for
two extra temporary assistants to help us deliver the
digital content in time.
Hans Merensky Trust
The Hans Merensky Trust
officially granted the Digitisation Office permission to
digitise all the personal documents of Dr Hans Merensky.
We regard this as a very great honour to be trusted by
the Hans Merensky Trust with the very valuable and
important archival documents of the late Dr Hans
Merensky.
Basic paper preservation
work will play an important part during the project and
anyone interested in digitisation or paper preservation
are welcome to visit the Digitisation Office.

We entered for the -
"Libraries with a kick" poster
competition for the Football World Cup 2010 in South
Africa which was sponsored by Goethe-Institut in
cooperation with LIASA and IFLA Africa Section.
The digitisation team did some
brainstorming for ideas and slogans and JANINE LOUBSER
(a part time worker in the office) did the design.
Janine won the third price!
Congratulations to Janine, we are so proud of you, well
done.

Rock The Boat |
|
How
often are you afraid to do what you want to do because
you might upset someone? How often have you gotten the
message, "Don't rock the boat?" What this message is
telling you is to stay in line and don't cause conflict.
However, rocking the boat is not always a bad thing.
Bringing new ideas to the forefront is a good thing even
if it does upset the status quo.
Being
yourself and having your own ideas is sometimes
challenging. You will meet with resistance. There will
be those who want you to fit in and be like everyone
else. Being like everyone else does not rock the boat.
It also doesn't allow you to express your true
self either.
The most important thing in life is that you are
true to yourself. If you go along to please
others and not cause trouble, in the end you will have
sold out. Being true to yourself means speaking your
truth, following your inner wisdom, and being willing to
take a stand for what you believe. It is never easy, but
is always more rewarding than following the crowd.
Fitting in and getting along may not rock the
boat, but it won't let you be your either. You
are unique and have special gifts to offer the world. If
you choose just to follow, you will not be able to fully
express who you are. Being yourself is the only way that
you can live and fully express who you are.
Is
there something that you want to do, but are afraid to
proceed because it might rock the boat?
The
next time you fear rocking the boat, take a big breath,
and rock away!

Conquer
Writing Procrastination |
|
You've
vowed to write that important business memo or
report—the one you've been putting off. But when you
open up your word processor, you stare listlessly at the
blank computer screen. You just don't know where to
start. Besides, the plant on your desk needs water, your
paper clip supply is running low, and you have several
phone messages to return. . .
It's
common to procrastinate when a high stakes writing job
looms. Here are six tips to help you move forward and
get the right words flowing.
Choose a productive place and time.
If you concentrate best amidst the office hubbub of
clattering keyboards and ringing phones, fine. If not,
try to carry out your writing task in a quieter spot
(like an empty office or conference room) where you're
less likely to be interrupted or distracted.
In
addition, zero in on your most energetic time of day to
tackle your writing job. Are you a morning person, or do
you get a second wind in the late afternoon? Whatever
time you choose, make a serious commitment to yourself
to keep your writing appointment.
Make it manageable.
If at first glance your writing task seems overwhelming,
cut it down to size by dividing it into logical parts
that are easier to handle.
No one
says you have to start at the beginning and proceed in
order. Choose a starting point that seems to work for
you. Write the easiest part first—or even the hardest
part. Start with the conclusion, the introduction, or
even somewhere in the middle.
Getting just a small piece of writing out of the way
will give you a sense of accomplishment and build
momentum for the rest of the job.
Overcome perfectionism.
If you're blocked because you're afraid your writing
won't be good enough, silence your inner critic. Suspend
self-evaluation for now and just write whatever comes.
To
carry out this technique, known as "Freewriting," set a
time limit of 10 or 15 minutes. During this time, write
whatever comes to mind on your topic. Keep writing
without stopping to edit or to read back what you've
written. Don't worry about spelling or word choice, just
keep going.
When
you reach your time limit, pat yourself on the back for
having gotten off to a good start. Then, refine what
you've written, use what you can, and keep at it.
Say it first.
Another way to overcome writer's block is to speak
rather than write. It's often easier to talk it through
than write it down.
Pretend you're talking to a non-judgmental but
interested colleague, and record your voice. Explain the
main points you want to convey in your written piece.
Don't worry about fancy language. Keep a conversational
tone.
When
you play back your explanation, take notes. You will
find key ideas and phrases to use in your writing. Your
everyday spoken language will also help you keep your
written work easy to understand.
Enlist a writing buddy. A
writing buddy can provide accountability. Tell your
writing buddy that you are going to work on your writing
task for a specified number of minutes. Your writing
buddy can do other work nearby while you're writing, but
at the end of your time limit you must show your buddy
what you've accomplished.
Distracted by a phone call or other interruption? Your
buddy's role is to observe this and prod you to get back
to work if you start to get sidetracked by other tasks
during your writing time.
Reward yourself.
Before you begin, plan some meaningful rewards for
completing the main parts of your writing job. Whether
it's a coffee break, a donut, or the chance to do more
pleasurable work, make sure to provide something
positive for yourself after each part of the job is
accomplished—and perhaps a bigger reward once the entire
writing task is finished.
When
you apply these tips, you'll not only overcome initial
writing inertia, you'll also gain momentum towards
completing your entire writing task. Your timely, on
target memo or report will earn you kudos as a clear
business thinker whose writing inspires others to
action.
