Five members of UP Libraries attended
DITCHE National IT Event |
|
Five members of our staff were fortunate to attend the
DITCHE National IT Event, hosted and sponsored by TENET,
at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Port
Elizabeth), from 20 – 22 May 2008. The five members who
attended this conference were Leonora Wydeman, Ria
Groenewald, Tumi
Madihlaba,
Hennie Müller and Ina Smith. Soekie Swanepoel attended
this event together with the GAELIC team, and they’ve
shared the results of their investigation on consortiums
(to centralize or to distribute) with us. Tsumi
delivered a paper on the “Phonet family of systems”,
while Ina and Ria addressed all on digital preservation
issues. Visit
https://www.up.ac.za/dspace/handle/2263/5393
to view their presentation. Very view international
institutions have a digital preservation policy, and
none of the SA institutions represented at DITCHE have
such a policy either. The University of Rhodes indicated
that they would like to work along with us towards
compiling such a policy/ strategy that can then be
implemented by all others interested. Another positive
outcome was that the Stellenbosch University indicated
that they would like to become involved in making DSpace
easily available for all to use by configuring it to an
image that can then be installed with great ease. The
networking opportunities with fellow colleagues were
great, and many new ties were established. Pam Govender
from the Durban University of Technology said their eyes
are constantly on the University of Pretoria to see what
are the new trends and how to go about to implement
their repository and make a success thereof.

Wynand van der Walt (SABINET), Stephen
Visagie (University of Namibia) and Hennie Müller (UP)
in deep conversation.
When asked how it happened that he became
a librarian, Stephen said he wanted to enrol for a
straight BA,
but ended up enrolling for a BBibl thanks
to a “babbelas” from the previous evening, and since it
sounded like a good idea
(one of his friends was then in her 2nd
year).
He is now a systems librarian, very
enthusiastic about open source, and apply IT in creative
and innovative ways at their libraries.

The
Veterinary Science Library reaches out to the community |
|
Situated only 1,5 km North of the main entrance of the
Onderstepoort campus, along the M35, is the
Onderstepoort Primary School. The school has
approximately 150 pupils.
On 22 November 2007 four staff members of the Veterinary
Science Librarian paid a visit to this school. Several
donations, such as story books, coloring books, crayons,
modeling clay, pencils and other stationery, as well as
toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste were
distributed to the children.
This donation was received from the following donors in
Vermont, USA:
-
Russell Memorial Library, Monkton;
-
Lawrence Memorial Library, Bristol;
-
Margaret Pierce Teitelbaum (dental supplies);
-
Marv Greenberg, D.V.M.;
-

Posters were made to accompany the dental donation,
explaining the correct use of each item.
The Veterinary Science Library also donated duplicate
journals such as Animal Talk and Farmer’s Weekly to use
in the classes.
Not only did the children and their teachers enjoy the
visit, but it was such an enriching experience for the
librarians, they decided to surprise the children the
following week with ice cream and sweets!
For a photographic overview of the first visit go to :

All the photos taken during the two visits are
available on Flickr at

The Veterinary Science Students are also running the
Madidi Tutoring Project at the Ntolo High School. We
are supporting them in their endeavors to start a
library at this school, emphasizing the children’s
involvement and responsibility. If anyone wishes to
contribute towards this project, please contact us and
we will organize for the material to be collected.
