Genealogical Society of South Africa visits Special
Collections |
|
The local branch of the
Genealogical Society of South Africa visited the Library
and in particular Special Collections on 14th
August. Their chief aim was to familiarise themselves
with our resources and services and how to utilise them
as day users. But they were also keen to view our
collections and the Old Merensky.
Please note that the date
fell on a Saturday and that the visitors numbered about
70. We tried, but failed, to visualise 70 people
trooping all at once through the confined areas of
Special Collections. Still, we did not go into a flat
spin. We saw it as a good opportunity for networking and
community involvement. We calmly gathered our Africana
friends around us and made a plan.
It was decided to divide
the group into three and to keep all three entertained
at the same time – and to rotate them twice, of course.
Which meant that Faan had to conduct three groups of
people on a tour through Africana and the Old Merensky,
one after the other, showing them our collection of
published genealogical works (on special display in the
Old Merensky), some rare and valuable books, Eridine’s
music collections and of course the Moerdijk masterpiece
itself. Being a genealogist of note himself, Faan spoke
the visitors’ language, and was the best man for the job
of telling them who we are, what we do and what we have
on our shelves.
Thank you, Faan, for being
our friend and volunteering your services on a Saturday
morning.
Another volunteer was Anja,
who passed up an opportunity to play war games with her
husband and friends and rallied around our flag instead.
She took on UPSpace and demonstrated it three times in a
row in the Committee Room. For the majority of the
visitors it was the first time that they heard terms
such as open access and full text information
resources. They were especially pleased to learn about
the journal called Pretoriana (all the issues from no. 1
- 89 are available on UPSpace with the rest soon to
follow) because of its plentiful biographical and
genealogical information.
Thank you Anja, for
staying loyal even though you’re no longer on our staff.
The third group was
informed about library use and access to library
resources by means of a Power Point presentation in the
PSK, with yours truly as their host. Some of them were
pleasantly surprised to learn that the library is not
only for use by UP staff and students, albeit at a fee,
and that they can have access to e-resources inside the
library.
Katrien was on duty in
Africana but managed to visit all three venues with her
camera to record the event for posterity. The great
success of the visit was also due to help received from
Una (arrangements), Alett (e-resources) and our
in-house IT support system called Mari.

Boost
your Professional Effectiveness |
Wisdom in the best companies and
organizations resides in the support
staff as much as, if not more than,
members of the management team!
Here were her four observations on how
to be most effective in the office. I
think they're an excellent refresher for
us all.
1.
Be a hub of information, not a rest
stop.
In this too-busy business world, it can
be easy to let important information sit
idle on our desks as we justify that
other priorities take precedence.
However, information is the true
currency of business! If we fail to
provide data or news to others that can
help them do their work, we fail our
employer and even ourselves. So move
information quickly, and keep it going!
Do all you can to improve communication
in your office.
2.
In a meeting, are you taking the minutes
or are you
part
of the minutes?
It's easy to attend meetings and "zone
out" - especially since studies show
that many meetings are unnecessary! The
challenge for success-minded
professionals like you is to engage
yourself in what's happening in the
meeting, not simply take notes you may
never consult again. Contribute your
thoughts when they add real value.
Change the direction and the tenor of
the meeting so the outcome is even more
actionable and positive. Bottom line:
Get involved!
3.
Be "future focused," especially when
you're overwhelmed.
The typical human reaction to stress is
to fixate on the current situation.
Result: People literally forget the
future and fail to plan for it - which
only makes them feel even more
overwhelmed. Talk about a vicious cycle!
Break it by intentionally pausing during
stressful times, thinking about pending
work and planning ahead how you'll
handle it. The more aware you are, the
more prepared you'll be when the future
finally rolls around.
4.
Make yourself a work priority.
Take care of your health - mentally and
physically - on a daily basis, and
never, ever take it for granted. Even
the "engine that could" needed fuel to
get up the mountain, and tracks to guide
it to the top. We're no different! True,
I advocate testing your limitations and
stretching life's parameters so you
ultimately become the very best you can
be. But you must know your limits, too.
Only by being "fully functional" and
making yourself a priority equal to any
other in the workplace can you achieve
stardom in your career!

Recipes for placing meat between slices of bread date
back to Roman times. However, that was for steak, not
minced meat. Thus, the steak burger is older than the
hamburger! Sausage is one of the oldest forms of

The tongue is a muscle with glands, sensory cells,
and fatty tissue that helps to moisten food with saliva.
You cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva.
For instance, if salt is placed on a dry tongue, the
taste buds will not be able to identify it. As soon as
saliva is added, the salt dissolves and the taste
sensation takes place.
There are 4 basic tastes. The salt and sweet taste
buds are at the tip of the tongue, bitter at the base,
and sour along the sides.

The reason honey is so easy to digest is that
it’s already been digested by a bee.
