South African art / James Ambrose Brown

Cover photo : South African art / James Ambrose Brown

About the book:

Art in South Africa began with the Bushmen rock painters and the Hottentot potters. The earliest European settlers brought their artistic traditions and treasures with them and a long time elapsed before an indigenous artistic culture developed - born of the light and colour of Southern Africa.

The burgeoning Cape civilisation of the 18th century saw the beginning of the sculpture applied to architecture.
