One cannot imagine the splendid array of gardens hidden
behind walls and houses throughout South Africa; some
nestling in the shelter of indigenous forests, some
gracing large farms or historic and celebrated homesteads,
others in the valleys or on mountain tops, and still
others, secret retreats amid the bustle of the city.
Nancy Gardiner has ventured behind the walls of private
homes, often to places remote or little known, to uncover
the treasures they conceal.
A collection of magnificent full colour photographs
displays the startling variety of gardens in different
regions, a variety resulting not only from ingenuity
of individual designers, but often determined by the
climatic and environmental conditions of the region.
