Getting a click on E-books!

By Amelia Breytenbach

In March 2000 a best-selling author, Stephen King, released a new work Riding the Bullet exclusively on the Internet. King, who has published some 30 bestsellers on paper, chose to release the 66-page novella in cyberspace alone. Within 24 hours 400,000 readers had downloaded the book. (Online Newshour, March 16, 2000)

E-books are starting to go to mainstream because more readers are ready to shed their traditional habits and turn to the electronic future. You can get e-books in minutes without going to a library or bookshop, search through text, customize the way they look, insert electronic bookmarks and even look up the meanings of words.

What is available in our Library and how do I access them?
At this stage we provide a link in our catalogue (UPExplore) and in the UPPortal to the full-text book on the WWW.

The correct proxy setting for your computer to be able to use the collection is available at: http://explore.up.ac.za/screens/fulltexth.html
